Who We Are
In 2018, Southern States Investment Holdings (SSIH) was restructured with a new mission of making strategic investments that accelerate the build-out of a modern electric grid in North America and around the world.
Leveraging the unique positioning of Southern States, LLC (SSL) – a leading provider of essential grid components and services for more than a century – we have built a group of seven complementary companies that have proven the value of our mission.
Philosophy
In 1996, Raj Anand began his tenure as CEO of Southern States during a time when the company was struggling to survive. Within 12 months, Southern States stabilized and was well on its way towards the most prosperous period in its history. A forward-looking vision combined with a customer-oriented mindset are two key principles that have laid the foundation for our long-term success.
Strategy
Invest for the Long Term
We do not invest to resell. We invest for long-term growth and value creation within each company and the Southern States Group, as a whole. We look for companies that we would be comfortable holding permanently alongside other owners and managers who align with our values. Rather than pursue large one-time liquidity events for our companies, we prefer to patiently accrue returns over time.
Independent Companies
We keep each company’s operations independent from each other so that the management of each company remains focused entirely on executing their strategy. We foster collaboration between companies only when it makes sense for both sides. This approach allows the greatest flexibility in investment structures, market strategies, and execution.
Competitively Differentiated
We are attracted to businesses with products, services, technologies, or strategies that don’t follow mainstream market trends. We invest in companies which are often niche suppliers or focused on narrow market segments with unmet customer needs.
Strong Management
We prefer to partner with existing management teams and avoid companies in need of a substantial turnaround, restructuring, or new management. We want to accelerate existing growth strategies through our unique base of capital, expertise, and market access.
